Sunday 2nd November 2025 – Calver to Bakewell

The walk today from Calver to Bakewell, via Great Longstone, was attended by 22 walkers and 14 non-walkers. A very good turnout indeed! Maybe it was because it was my Torro’s walk… though that might just be wishful thinking.

Before we set off, Jean mentioned that from next year we’ll be using a smaller 35-seater bus, which should help cut down on costs. The fare will have to go up a little to keep the club running smoothly, which seems fair enough given the times.

Now, on to the walk itself. We started with a steady climb out of Calver, and straight away we were treated to some lovely views across the valley. Then we carried on towards Bleaklow — though it’s not bleak at all! From there you can see for miles in every direction, and it really makes you stop and take it all in.

From Bleaklow we crossed the fields to Great Longstone, where the White Lion pub was a most welcome sight. Never has a pint, or even just a cuppa, tasted better after such a fine stretch of the legs.

After the pub we went under the Monsal Trail and carried on to Bakewell, where we met up with the non-walkers. It was a really good day all round — lovely weather, excellent views, and great company. You couldn’t ask for better!
