Sunday 5th August 2023 – Spofforth to Knaresborough
This month’s walk was Spofforth to Knaresborough approximately 7.4 miles.
There were twenty four walkers and three none walkers this month. The weather was sunny but rain was expected in the afternoon. The walk started with a stroll through the very nice village of Spofforth taking in the ruined castle which was in fact a fortified manor house, we passed some small cottages before walking over the bridge crossing the river Crimple.
The group carried along the side of the river through fields then turning right and up to the main road where we stopped for coffee. Turning right along the road and upto Plumpton Rocks which were hidden by the trees, the paths were not well trodden and were wet with all the rain we had in the last few days. We walked round the hall and out along farm tracks turning left through a wood to the main road which had a lot of traffic so it took a while to cross, continuing through the wood we came to the back of the Lido Leisure Park with lovely static homes which some of the group were talking about maybe looking to buy. I must admit they looked very nice. Carrying on the group turned left along the river to the Watermill Mill Café where we stopped for lunch, some finishing off with an ice cream from the café. We carried along the river towards Knaresborough. The walk so far had been quite easy but this was about to change, we had to Travis tree roots whilst going uphill and down, passing over fallen trees and on occasion some mud.
We eventually came out across from Mother Shipton’s Inn, crossing over the river and turning left along the river where some of the group went for a well deserved drink of tea. The weather held it did turn cloudy but at least the rain held off.
We all met up in the Worlds End Pub but unfortunately one of our lady walkers tripped in the pub and it was reported that she may have broken her ankle , let’s hope she’s back out waking soon.
