Sunday 2nd October 2022 – Heatherdene to Castleton, Derbyshire Peak District.
Today’s walk was led by Brian Jenkinson, 7 ½ miles . 34 people on the coach today, 30 walkers and 4 non-walkers who would have their own adventure in Castleton. The coach dropped the walkers off at Heatherdene then carried on to Castleton with the non-walkers. Lovely sunny weather greeted us as we got off the coach, a great start . We used the facilities at Heatherdene then set off on our walk with everyone chatting happily and looking forward to a great walk.
We passed Ladybower Reservoir which was very low .The next path was following the Thornhill Carrs Sculpture Trail which was very interesting. The sculpture trail is in memory of a young girl called Emma Mckinlay who died of a rare illness. Emma had a love of walking and a passion for art, so this is where the idea came from. Trevor Roebuck spotted red cap fungus along this route and a Kingfisher was spotted by Steve Duffy along the river.
We had our first stop of the day sitting admiring views of the Hope Valley. The next stop was Hope village for lunch. After lunch the walk took us towards signs for Losehill which we could see in the distance. We followed these signs for a while and then followed signs for Castleton. Lots of stiles to manoeuvre over on this walk (thank you Brian), which adds to the fun and lots of help from the gents if needed by the ladies. Once in Castleton we had time for a look around or visit a pub or coffee shop.
