Sunday 5th February 2023 – Bakewell Circular

The Bus stopped in Baslow for toilets and a Coffee break, then onto Bakewell Show Ground where we were to drop off all walkers and none walkers. Andy our driver joined us for the walk. Going out round the back of the Show Ground we turned right along the road down to the bridge which is the end or start (depending on which way you are going) of the Monsal Trail. Turning left after a short climb up to the trail we carried on past the now old abandoned railway station of Bakewell to Hassop a distance of 2.7 miles from our starting point. Here we stopped for tea/coffee and a comfort break. After a short walk, we turned right off the Monsal Trail down to the A6020, crossing the road and into the field. Bearing right to walk around the field boundary with a stone wall to our right. We carried on over three stiles to the road where we turned left. Walking a short distance along Longreave Lane we turned right towards the tiny hamlet of Rowland. From here we walked across fields into Great Longston for lunch and a pub stop in the White Lion. We walked out of the pub car park across fields under the Monsal Tail and past Churchdale Hall where we had a group photo. Skirting Ashford in the Water the walk continued along the river Wye bridleway into Bakewell. It was said that we walked 9.5 miles (no comment), the weather was nice and sunny the walking was relatively easy, and the company was excellent.
