Sunday 2nd February 2025 – Idle Valley Nature Reserve

After January’s walk was unfortunately cancelled due to heavy snow, we were all hoping for kinder weather this month – and, for once, the weather didn’t let us down!

With bright skies and a hint of spring in the air, 21 of us, along with our trusty driver Andy, set off on a delightful 9-mile walk from the Visitor Centre at Idle Valley Nature Reserve. The route took us past the reserve’s serene lakes before following the gentle meandering banks of the River Idle.

Crossing over a picturesque stone bridge, we continued our journey along the opposite side of the river. After about a mile, we crossed back over, only to encounter our first proper muddy patch! Thankfully, it didn’t last too long, and we carried on between vast expanses of water, spotting plenty of birdwatching hides along the way. Before long, we arrived in the charming village of Lound.

A short stroll led us to our much-anticipated pub stop at The Blue Bell. Those of us keen to tuck into our sandwiches first walked a little further into a small park bursting with beautiful snowdrops, complete with bespoke seating areas – the perfect place to relax and take in the peaceful surroundings.

Despite the forecast predicting overcast skies, the sun shone brightly, making it feel more like a crisp spring day. After a longer-than-usual break, we set off once more, following the road before veering left and re-entering the nature reserve. Along the way, we were treated to some fantastic bird sightings, including a Small Egret, Robins, Blue Tits, and a stunning Bullfinch. Dave even spotted a Buzzard on the journey to the start of the walk!

Back at the Visitor Centre, some of the group enjoyed a well-earned coffee before heading back to Doncaster, reflecting on what had been a truly wonderful and sociable day out.
