Sunday 1st June 2025 – Aysgarth Falls circular 7 ½ miles

There were 25 Weekend Wanderers on the coach today. Four non-walkers were dropped off at Harrogate to spend the day, the coach then carried on to Aysgarth Falls.  Arriving at the falls we were very happy to see that after plenty of recent rain they were putting on a fabulous show. Lots of photo opportunities. Wordsworth used to visit the falls and they were also the setting for a fight scene in the Hollywood film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

From the falls we carried on through woods which are part of the Aysgarth walking trail. It was quite windy and did start raining but everyone was very chatty and happy. Our next stop was at Redmire village. Two of the walkers found some local goods for sale with an honesty box . They were very pleased with their fresh eggs and homemade cake. We carried on to the village pub where refreshments were taken. Filming of all creatures great and small has taken place at this 17th century pub.

After Redmire village we took a leisurely walk to Castle Bolton then onwards to Carperby . Along this route there was a lot of stiles to negotiate but wonderful views of the Wensleydale countryside. Carperby is where James Herriot spent his honeymoon at the Wheatsheaf Inn. From Carperby we followed the Aysgarth trail back to the coach. There was lots of wildlife spotted on this walk including curlews, oystercatchers, dippers, grey wagtail and buzzards.

Thank you Steve Boundy for a lovely walk and to Graham for adding some photos as well as mine.
