Sunday 6th October 2024 – Ashford-in-the-Water

Breaking news: Trevor Roebuck has gracefully pushed his walk to next year. (Anticipation building, no pressure, Trevor!) But today’s walk delivered plenty of excitement to hold us over.

We kicked things off in the charming village of Ashford-in-the-Water, strolling through peaceful meadows and across the stunning Monsal Trail viaduct. All seemed serene… until we hit our first challenge: a welcoming committee of around 20 cows, casually blocking our path. They stood there like they owned the place (and maybe they did?), but after some careful negotiation, we managed to tiptoe past without anyone mooo-ving too fast.

Next up, the bustling A6 Buxton road—which, as usual, tested both our patience and our pedestrian skills. And just when we thought we were in the clear, we stumbled upon our next “obstacle”—a stream where a path should have been. Yep, the path decided it wanted a water feature today. Thanks to some teamwork, quick thinking, and a few leaps of faith, everyone made it across safely (and only slightly damp).

From there, it was all uphill—literally—but the lovely woodland climb rewarded us with a peaceful, scenic return to Ashford-in-the-Water.

A big thanks to Vivienne Dales for the fantastic photos and to our brave leader, David Torrington, for guiding us through cow standoffs, road crossings, and accidental river crossings.

And now, we eagerly await Trevor’s walk next year… let’s hope the cows have cleared the calendar for that one!
